About our Creative Writing Seminar
Admission essays are a major component of the college application process, and most students find writing them to be the most daunting part of the process. Students know what grades and SAT/ACT scores are required of them, but most students have not practiced the skill that makes an admission essay stand out: storytelling. The best college essays are not just a resume in essay form but a piece of narrative writing that gives the reader a better understanding of what makes that student who they are. This course will teach students how to turn important experiences into compelling stories. Beyond college admission essay writing, storytelling is a skill students will use throughout their college experience and onward in the business world.
About The Instructor
Caleb Heine
Caleb has been a storyteller since he could first speak, much to the chagrin of his parents; however, it wasn’t until his senior year of college that he discovered his love of fiction writing. After graduating with a B.A. in Multidisciplinary Studies: English and Psychology from Concordia University Texas in 2016, Caleb searched for opportunities to further study writing. He attended the Iowa Summer Writing Festival and began an internship with the Writers’ League of Texas, which he still volunteers with today. He interned with the local ghostwriting company Cider Spoon Stories and helped transcribe interviews for the book Of Tiny Threads: Stories About American Marriage. With several years of teaching writing under his belt, Caleb pursued an M.F.A. in Creative Writing: Fiction at Queens University of Charlotte, graduating in January 2021. Since then, he has published a couple of short stories and continued to write stories and study the craft.
